Our member company MCPV has received a €10 million grant to support the development of a 2.5 GW solar module production facility in Tudela, Spain. The funding marks an important milestone in MCPV’s mission to build a robust, next-generation solar manufacturing base in Europe.
“We are very grateful for this support and excited to accelerate our plans to develop, build, and operate large-scale, competitive Made-in-Europe solar cells and modules”, says Marc Rechter CEO of the Netherlands-based company.
The grant is part of an almost €300 million provisional allocation announced in March by Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO). The selected projects are considered key drivers of Spain’s clean energy transition. MCPV has previously been granted support from the Dutch National Growth Fund for a 4 GW solar cell manufacturing facility in Veendam, the Netherlands. Together, the two projects form a critical pillar of Europe’s effort to re-establish energy sovereignty and technological leadership in solar PV.
With a strong focus on silicon heterojunction (HJT) technology, MCPV aims to have both facilities fully operational by 2029. Construction is scheduled to begin in Veendam in late 2026, with the Tudela module plant breaking ground one year later. Permitting activities are already underway in both locations.
“History has shown that every crisis comes with opportunities. Europe is well on its way to create the conditions to enable its industry, entrepreneurs and innovators to take advantage of the opportunities by building the industries of the future. The support for our two facilities shows the great interest in our new cutting edge solar technology”, says Rechter.
MCPV was founded in 2020 by Marc Rechter MBA, Natalie Samovich MSc MBA, Prof. Dr. Eicke Weber, and Dr. Benjamin Strahm. MCPV developed over the past years a business and technology plan to build and operate GW-scale greenfield solar PV cell and module manufacturing projects in Veendam, The Netherlands and Navarra in Spain, respectively, looking to re-shore the PV industry based on the next generation heterojunction (HjT) PV cell technology.
