Key milestone for Swedish solar tech company and ESMC member

The Swedish developer and manufacturer of thin film solar cells and related production equipment and ESMC member, Midsummer AB, has secured an order worth SEK 143.5 million (approx. EUR 13 million) from a Swedish industrial and defense group. The order is for a turnkey production line for manufacturing thin film solar cells.
The contract covers a turnkey production line with an annual capacity of 15 MW for Midsummer’s flexible thin film solar cells. This marks the first phase of a planned solar cell factory outside Europe, with additional capacity expansions anticipated at a later stage.

Midsummer has previously expressed ambitions to sell scalable, turnkey solar cell factories with annual capacities of up to 200 MW (“mega-factories”) to partners in various countries.

“We see tremendous potential in offering turnkey production lines and solar factories to customers seeking a rapid green energy transition and electrification of their markets. Many also see the value in local production of the world’s most environmentally friendly solar cells, which can be installed on rooftops too weak to support traditional silicon panels.
Today’s order is a strong validation of our strategy. Our technology is proven, and we can quickly establish complete factories; providing all the equipment, managing the entire setup process, and offering support for ongoing operations, service, and panel distribution. We believe this is an attractive proposition for many countries and players.”

Eric Jaremalm, CEO of Midsummer.

Midsummer’s DUO is a turnkey production system for mass production of durable and flexible thin film solar cells (CIGS) with an ultra-low carbon footprint. Compact in design and optimized for high capacity, reliability, and material efficiency, the DUO system has become the most widely deployed production system for flexible thin film solar cells in the world.
